Ukraine has agreed that it will adhere to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, following a United States proposal. This comes one day after the senior-level dialogue between the U.S. and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia.
A Push for Peace
In a joint declaration, the U.S. announced that it would reinstate security aid and intelligence cooperation with Ukraine. Both nations also agreed to set up negotiation groups and begin long-term peace talks.
Senator Marco Rubio, speaking in Jeddah, hoped that Russia would agree to the ceasefire. “Ukraine is ready to stop the war and begin negotiations. If Russia rejects this offer, it will expose who is hindering peace,” he stated.
Russia Still to Respond
Moscow has not issued an official response but stated it will make a statement after negotiations with Washington.
In the meantime, former US President Donald Trump confirmed that he will be talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ceasefire. “Both sides have to agree,” he said, looking forward to an agreement in the near future. He also intimated inviting Zelensky back to Washington to resume talks.
A PACT Beyond Zelensky’s Offer
The proposed ceasefire is more than President Zelensky’s initial request for a limited truce in air and naval combat. Trump was applauded by Zelensky for the “positive result” of the negotiations and begged Russia to show its appetite for peace.
Conclusion
As tensions rise, the world waits with bated breath for Moscow’s response. Will Russia adopt the ceasefire and move towards peace, or will the war go on? The next couple of days will be crucial in determining the fate of this war.
