Much to the surprise of many, La Liga president Javier Tebas categorically rejected Dani Olmo’s registration with Barcelona on grounds that he should not be allowed to see out the La Liga season with the club, after Barcelona looked into re-registering Olmo and Pau Victor after the expiration of their first registrations at the end of December.
Tebas has said that La Liga has filed an appeal in order to revoke Olmo’s registration on grounds of the failure to comply with league guidelines. Even though the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) has temporarily blessed that registration, La Liga is now suing in order to challenge this decision.
These arrivals will have to wait for their go-ahead while Barcelona pursues their attempts to sign Olmo and Pau Victor. Since Barcelona has had financial troubles with registration so lately, La Liga challenges on the registration-operation deal signal a strain only in issues with regard to compliance to the demands of the league, particularly involving club spending or salary caps.
The rest is up in the air, and it remains to be seen how both parties will react to the stew once proceedings head to the courts. Barcelona fans, for their part, are keeping their fingers crossed that the ruling will be overturned, allowing Olmo to play for the club. In any case, it will be interesting to see how, if at all, La Liga’s appeal might alter the situation. Follow the case for more developments.
