Paradigm Shift on Illegal Wildlife Trade: How Somaliland Developed a Means to Save Environment and Biodiversity

Somaliland authorities recently claimed to have intercepted materials that would have been used to illegally export a banned substance into the country.

The recently reported drug bust operation conducted by the Somaliland Ministry of Environment and Climate Change cited that the security forces conducted sweeps in an attempt to seize the operation involving the trafficking of this substance. While resistance was put up against the arrests by those involved, they managed to elude capture and fled to safety.

The substance has been listed as one of the reasons leading to environmental and biodiversity threats in Somaliland’s coast and its ecosystems. Among the other problems contributing to environmental degradation in the region is the illegal transport and exportation of this substance. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change also mentioned that the immediate and extended exporting of the substances was projected to cause social instability and immense harm to the climate and the local economy.
