Deforestation: The Global Environment’s Sure Demise?

Deforestation is choking vast areas of forests the world over. The most dreadful effects of the losses to the ecosystems are the loss of habitat for innumerable species and the acceleration of climate change by diminishing the carbon dioxide-taking capacity of the earth. Rampant destruction on account of farming, logging, and urbanization makes rainforests-the “lungs of the Earth”-disappear at an alarming rate.

Mention is enough about recent thrusts against deforestation. In many places, reforestation programs have appeared and native tree planting is practiced. Governments and organizations are encouraging sustainable agricultural practices to prevent huge-scale clear-cutting of forests. The global initiatives such as REDD+ UN REDD program aim to conserve forests and keep local economies going.

Deforestation has remained a major concern that has not received sufficient attention. The mass consumers might have their own part to play in this context, as they can vote with their purses by choosing products that are sustainably sourced and produced in conjunction with companies whose missions address this environmental conservation. Thus the protection of forests does not mean just conserving nature; it means securing the future.
