This week, there were some rumors regarding Real Madrid’s Raul Asencio maybe being called up to the Spanish NT, due to Aymeric Laporte succumbing to an injury. While Asencio has been playing great football for some time in his club, some clarifications are to be made here.
Luis de la Fuente is aware that entering and securing a place in the national setup is a deluge putting into sheer consideration the existence of established defenders like Laporte and Robin Le Normand. Even though Asencio was impressive, he is further acknowledged for a call-up to Spain’s U21 side in the next international break for March.
However, there has not yet been any official confirmation that Asencio will replace Laporte at the senior level. His U21 call-up may provide the youngster with invaluable international exposure so that he may be groomed for future senior duty.
In short, while Raul Asencio is certainly on Spain’s radar, a call-up to the senior team due to Laporte’s injury is not likely now.
