Many civilians and soldiers died in a military plane crash in Omdurman region last night, according to an initial news report from the Suna News Agency.
According to a military spokesman for the Sudanese army, the plane crashed after takeoff at Wadi Seidna airport. The official did say that many dead and injured were among them; military personnel and civilians were victims. The wounded received treatment after being rushed to hospitals, and a fire that broke out in the Al-Iskan area was brought under control with the help of firefighters.
Military sources said the plane apparently suffered a technical malfunction at the time, and they confirmed that some senior officers were among those on board.
The horrible incident has raised serious concern in regard to the safety of Sudanese military aviation; the investigation is underway to ascertain cause and extent of damage from the crash.
