During a knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse, one person was killed and three police officers sustained injuries. The 37-year-old Algerian man was arrested at the scene. Authorities suspect terrorism because he is reported to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault.
The act took place in a prototype area, just outside the market, where police officers were controlling a demonstration. Two officers suffered grave injuries during the attacker, with the first suffering multiple stab wounds in the neck and the other punctured in the chest. A 69-year-old man was killed while trying to help stop the attack.
French Authorities reported that it had been decided that the suspect would be deported due to security concerns; Algeria, however, did not accept him back. President Macron condemned the act and promised to continue the fight against terrorism. The French Interior Minister called for reforms to the deportation code so that there will never be another attack like this.
Such acts are the latest in a wave of knife attacks occurring in France in the past few years in several instances linked to terrorism.
