The leader of the SSC-Khaatumo, Abdulqadir Firdhiye, has issued a strong statement to the international community opposing Somaliland’s request for recognition, saying Somaliland does not meet the criteria for statehood as it is a mono-tribal regime, which does not exercise jurisdiction over other Somali lands.
Firdhiye indicated that affirming Somaliland would produce instability, warning that it could rally Somalis against the recognition of Somaliland and ignite a war. He accused Somaliland of continuously providing support to extremist groups like Al-Shabaab and ISIS, with no credible evidence.
At the moment, SSC-Khaatumo is a transitional administration charged with governing areas previously administered by Somaliland including Las Anod. The statement is being made in the wake of reports hinting that the U.S. was thinking about acknowledging Somaliland—though as yet with no formal confirmation from the Biden administration.
