Fahad Yaasiin Xaaji Daahir, the former head of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency, expressed his rebuttals regarding the actions that President Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud has taken against the opposition politicians. While giving a speech to inaugurate a new hospital in the Hodan district, President Xasan directly addressed the accusations of the opposition on taking the country to a volatile situation. He dismissed the rumors by saying that being alarmist is a mental affliction with which they ought to seek help.
The former head of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency, Fahad Yaasiin, came out with an unusual suggestion in a tweet. Referring to the earlier remarks of the President that any leader who talked to their worst was to be taken to the hospital for mental health evaluation, he suggested that the new Hodan Hospital establish a special wing to cater to mental health and lasting confusions. “In reference to the President’s statement that any leader who speaks out should be sent to a hospital for evaluation, I propose that the new Hodan Hospital open a specialized section for mental health and conditions that cause confusion,” he wrote.
Fahad also suggested that the medical evaluation results of both national leaders and opposition figures be made public to the public. This came after the comments of an opposition politician, Cabdullaahi Sheekh Xasan, alleging that the Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud government had assembled a 10,000-man counter-offensive force secretly aimed at targeting opposition politicians.
With the elections of 2026 approaching, the political impasse of Somalia is reaching a boiling point. This is especially seen in opposition parties and some regional states that reject the electoral commission-led election preparations.
