Cancellation of Haboon Nuura’s Concert in Mogadishu Amid Public Controversy.

Coming directly from Hargeisa, Somaliland, Haboon Nuura was part of the same crew of Hargeisa-based singers who comprised a song bellowing animosity toward Mogadishu during Somalia’s defense against Ethiopia’s maritime claims.

Lyrics such as, “We have no enemy worse than Mogadishu,” along with praise for Ethiopia, which was at the time trying to grab Somalia’s coastline.

On her arrival in Mogadishu, Haboon Nuura shunned the freedom of the Federal Republic of Somalia flag, which was offered during her reception.

She was also unwilling to record an apology addressing her close involvement in the controversial song. These actions led to divided public sentiments in Mogadishu:

There were some who opposed her concert in the city.
On the other hand, there were some who supported the concert, feeling that resentment must not be directed at her.
It was actually meant for the Hotel Elate on Liido Beach, although said to have been canceled through the agency of Somali Federal Government security, as no official declaration has been made.
