The Fifth Somali Workers' Congress has Begun in Mogadishu.


Mogadishu-on Monday opened the Fifth Congress of Somali Workers’ Unions (FESTU) in Mogadishu, with the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Cabdisalaan Cabdi Cali (Dhaay), officiating.

About 320 delegates from the 18 labor unions, representing Somali workers, from the federal member states and Banadir region participated in the meeting, where discussions will revolve around key labor issues, such as labor protection, democratizing practices of unity between workers, fighting against injustice, and ensuring fair opportunity to jobs.

In his opening address, Deputy Prime Minister Dhaay continued to express satisfaction with the adoption of the revised labor law by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud-the first significant update in 52 years. He termed this as a historic milestone towards strengthening labor rights and enhancing the working conditions of the workers in Somalia.

He reiterated that the government remains committed to offering more job opportunities and to continue with the Decent Work Country Programme, which aims to support Somalia’s labor market towards sustainable economic growth.

“This is the point which is crucial to Somalia,” declared Dhaay:National that is keen to make progress that will see its citizens enjoy additional modes of survival through hard work.”
