Arab leaders have approved a $53 billion Gaza reconstruction plan to counter the contested plan by former U.S. President Donald Trump to resettle over two million Palestinians. The plan was approved in an emergency Cairo summit, where Arab leaders gathered to condemn forced Palestinian displacement.
The Egyptian plan, which is referred to as an “Arab plan,” is a 91-page detailed document for the rebuilding of Gaza’s infrastructure with the goal of creating long-term solutions for the displaced. The plan emphasizes a two-state solution, calling for a Palestinian state in addition to Israel.
The proposal also recommends the creation of a “Gaza Reconstruction Committee” to oversee the rebuilding, though doubts have been raised about Hamas’ future involvement. Some Arab nations demand that Hamas be disbanded, while others believe Palestinians need to decide on their leadership.
Gulf nations have expressed interest in funding the reconstruction, but there is also concern about greater likelihood of a future war. The proposal has three phases and the first involves clearing wreckage and setting up temporary homes for Palestinians who were displaced.
Trump has remained consistent in his support of his relocation scheme, regardless of Palestinian resistance, and recently posted an AI-generated clip that depicts a Gaza under his vision for its future. The success of the Arab reconstruction scheme is based on international backing and preserving Gaza’s future in Palestinian control.
