Ramadan, being the holiest month on the Islamic calendar, is considered a month for spiritual focus and contemplation, prayer, and community by Muslims all over the world. Just like any other Muslim, the Somali Muslim community welcomes the aforementioned holy month with unshakable sincerity and unity as millions initiate the daily fast from dawn to sunset.
The Meaning of Ramadan
The month of Ramadan is not a mere feast, but it is one of the largest occasions for Tantra, self-purifying, and worship. This month symbolizes the receiving of the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Jibra’il (peace be upon him). It is a month devoted to reconsolidating Muslim belief, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and selfless charity. Fasting is one of the five basic pillars of Islam. It is the total abstaining from eating, drinking, or other physical needs during the daylight hours.
Ramadan in the Culture of Somali People
Ramadan is more than a mere obligation for Somalis. It’s a time for some very deep and close communal bonds. Before dawn, families get together for Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal), known also as breakfast before the dawn prayer, and none break their fast without dates and water-first things to start with-in imitation of the Prophet. Dishes like Sambuusa, Canjeero, and Maraq are served, bringing some cultural warmth to the holy month.
Sound the call to prayer; the Mosques are filled with worshippers performing Taraweeh prayers. The Quran is recited through every home and institution of worship. Charitable acts abound in this month, as Zakat (mandatory almsgiving) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) spread kindness and hope within all members of society.
A Moment To Connect and Reflect
Ramadan is a month on fasting and more; patience, self-control, and kindness are expected. Somali Muslims, whether in Somalia or in different countries of the world, take this opportunity to reflect on their faith, strengthen family ties, and provide for a greater community of people.
As Ramadan begins, we welcome everyone: Ramadan Kareem! May this blessed month be serene, fulfilling, and bring blessings upon every Muslim, and especially on our Somali brothers and sisters.
