Somalia’s Regional Political Tensions

Growing tensions between the Jubbaland regional administration and the federal government in Somalia have given rise to concerns about political stabilities. More senior officials from Jubbaland, including the Minister of Planning and the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, have resigned in protest against the federal government policies.

Jubbaland President Ahmed Islam Madobe has convened a meeting with regional legislators in Kismayo to discuss these mounting disagreements. The disputes generally revolve around the federal dominance over elections and the autonomy of the regional governments, an issue that has plagued the Somali governing structure throughout the ages.

Some observers are beginning to fear that such Political infighting might scuttle any ongoing efforts to stabilize Somalia and confront terrorism in the region. Others have suggested that before political fragmentation arises further, the federal government and regional states should talk to put an (un)breakable peace in place.
